Winter of Grand Contentment Continues at Tahoe South as New Snowfall Enhances Ideal Conditions
Feb. 18, 2016 (SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev.) Two feet of new powder has blanketed Tahoe South adding to an already blockbuster base at Heavenly Mountain Resort, Sierra-at-Tahoe, and Kirkwood Mountain Resort – and it’s still snowing. The latest storm started Wednesday night providing two feet at area resorts and a foot at lake level. Another 1-3 inches at lake level and 3-7 inches at higher elevations are predicted for Thursday afternoon. Mostly sunny/clear skies are in the forecast through the weekend. (www.tahoesouth.com)
Forecasters are suggesting the El Niño influenced weather pattern will continue through spring. To date, Heavenly Mountain Resort (http://www.skiheavenly.com) has a season total of 287 inches, Sierra-at-Tahoe, (https://www.sierraattahoe.com) 325 inches, and Kirkwood Mountain Resort (http://www.kirkwood.com) is at 322 inches.
As of Feb. 2 Sierra snowpack was at 130 percent of the February average. On average, California’s statewide snowpack is 114 percent of normal for this time of year.
“The storms continue to make positive impacts with both water content and the economy,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “Visitors, locals, and businesses are smiling with sales well above last year levels. Plus, the forecast calls for more in the ensuing months.”
A fleet of city and state snow removal vehicles around the Lake Tahoe Basin will be keeping the roads clear and safe for travel.
