Snow Falling at Tahoe and in Forecast Through Monday
Another series of winter storms are underway with 1-3 feet at mountain tops and 5-9 inches at lake level expected through Friday. Early season snowfall totals at South Shore resorts already range from 59-79 inches providing top to bottom conditions at Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Mountain Resort and Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort (https://tahoesouth.com/).
NOAA forecasters call for the latest system to continue Thursday afternoon and evening with significant snowfall through Friday morning. A chance of snow is possible Friday afternoon through Monday, Dec. 14 with traces of accumulation.
“These weekly storm systems have been lining up perfectly and we’re ready for more,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “We love seeing the slopes and pine trees blanketed in snow for the holidays.”
A fleet of city and state snow removal vehicles around the Lake Tahoe Basin will be keeping the roads clear and safe for travel. Snow sports and entertainment combine with Winter Ignite at Heavenly Mountain Resort beginning Friday through Dec. 12. (http://www.skiheavenly.com). On-mountain activities feature Unbuckle Après Parties at Tamarack Lodge, Dec. 10-12 and Heavenly's famous DJ Cat, Dec. 12. Popular rock/indie duo, Matt and Kim, will perform a free concert in the Heavenly Village at 7:30 p.m. with an after-party at Peek Nightclub in Harrah’s.

South Lake Tahoe’s new local ’70s rock band, Stranger Weather, will headline the first show of the 2nd Annual FNCTN (pronounced fungk-shen) Winter Music Series, Dec. 17. The series will continue every Thursday, Jan. 14 - March 17, at the Lakeview Loft located above Dart Beverage. Roger That’s House Parties with live DJ’s at Xhale Lounge will pop off every other Friday from Jan. 15 - April 1. Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (http://www.toccatatahoe.com) hosts its 10th annual production of Handel’s Messiah at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Dec. 18. The TOCCATA production is a celebration of the holidays and includes favorite selections from Messiah, Parts One and Three, as well as seasonal carols.
The spirit of the season kicks into high gear with Heavenly Holidays, a two-week festival, Dec. 20-31 at Heavenly Village. (http://www.theshopsatheavenly.com) The event features caroling, live music, magicians, jugglers, photos with Santa and a parade with Heavenly mascot, Ripperoo.
The celebration crescendos Dec. 31 with live music from LA ALLSTARS BAND followed by a brightly-lit gondola ball-drop that descends down the mountain, fire dancers, ice carving and a festive fireworks show at 9 p.m. to welcome 2016. The party continues into the night at all of the casino nightclubs.
South Lake Tahoe’s newest hotspot, The Loft Live Theatre – Lounge – Dining, will see 2015 vanish and 2016 appear with two New Year’s Eve magic show celebrations. Located within the Heavenly Village, The Loft opens Dec. 15 with a first for the California side of Tahoe South by combining theatre with nightly live entertainment, an intimate bar, lounge and restaurant with authentic Italian cuisine. SnowGlobe Music Festival returns, Dec. 29-31, with high energy, sights and sonic sounds that deck the halls and stretch the outer limits of imagination leading into the New Year www.snowglobemusicfestival.com. The three-day dance party outside at Lake Tahoe Community College features Jack U, Kaskade, Dillon Francis, Chet Faker, plus dozens of other acts. SnowGlobe will also feature dynamic fireworks displays and "big air" snowboarding and skiing demos between main stage sets.
Recently named one of the "Best Airports for Skiers" by SKI Magazine, Reno Tahoe International Airport has also added a number of new flights including New York City’s JFK via JetBlue, and Boise, Idaho among other key gateway air cities. RTIA provides easy and convenient access within an hour to Tahoe South with the six-lane, 65-mile-per-hour I-580 freeway. The 8.5-mile divided freeway features anti-icing technology.
