Something New to Start Your Year

By: Cam Schilling

We may have just ended the wildest week (or two) long celebration of the year, but if you don’t know, that’s just how it goes around here. With the holidays out of the way, we can now focus on our wicked winter season which has really just begun. New year, new outlook, new winter recreation and shenanigans, same ol’ Lake Tahoe tribe.

If you were a bit bummed by an underwhelming finish to 2018’s snowfall, things are already looking up for 2019. Just one little storm and suddenly everyone starts remembering, there’s nothing better than this perfect pocket of sunshine and snow we have here.

Along with the proper winter fixings are many ways to try something new and immerse yourself in local life and leisure. Another promising season lies ahead with many amusing places and events popping up in our big-little community, here’s a handful of activities to start your year on the right foot.

Activities

Yosemite Axe Throwing – picture something similar to darts, except everyone, actually wants to play (haha). Axe throwing is the latest of the day games that you didn’t know you needed. Yosemite Axe Throwing is not your typical axe throwing range. Nate Hodges, the owner and #2 ranked U.S. Stihl Timbersports Athlete has taken much pride in creating an environment that stands alone in the axe-throwing world., the fun can be found at 3979 Lake Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe CA, right next to Applebee’s Restaurant.

Blue Granite Climbing – Bonus: Refuge Coffee – finally, no more leaving town to climb when the outdoors are glum, need not go further than the ‘Y’ for some belaying and bouldering. The new climbing facility at 1259 Emerald Bay Road boasts two separate roped climbing areas with multiple self belay systems, a free climb/bouldering area with multiple routes to train and conquer, a studio for a range of specialty classes, a climbing-focused gym with aerobic and weight machines, even a sauna. They even host competitions. Right inside you’ll also find premium coffee from local South Lake coffee roasters at Refuge Coffee.

Camp Richardson Snowshoe Cocktail Races – Check back for 2022 dates. This event is not new at all, but maybe a new tradition for you. Back for another winter of good competitive fun and hearty laughter, you’ve never done snowshoeing like this before. If you think you have what it takes to strap on snowshoes and run up and down the snowy beach through an obstacle course with a full cocktail tray in hand, the prize may be yours to claim. Be the fastest or the cleanest at the end and enjoy celebrating with drink and food specials all night. Show up for the first event on January 19th, joining the fun is FREE.

Doob of South Lake Tahoe – Get doobed! Doob is the newest and coolest blend of art and cutting-edge technology to hit Lake Tahoe. A doob™ is a 3D printed replica of a photo-realistic version of yourself, a friend, even pets using 66 different cameras for a nearly perfect replication. You’ve got to see it in person, find them at 1001 Heavenly Village way #30A.

RISE Designs – These guys are no strangers to Tahoe, but they do have an awesome new location. You’ve undoubtedly seen them at the local markets and popups and probably styled by any of your friends. It’s because they have the best prices at $15-$20 a hat (you’ll find many that you want to purchase) but also the coolest designs/apparel anyway. I encourage you to buy something that you actually like for yourself, check them out near the ‘Y’ at 2227 James Ave. #4.

As always with the unpredictable Lake Tahoe squalls and storms we see, remember to carry tire chains and drive with care. It’s also a good call to visit the Road Conditions Map as you plan your day. Get after it and be safe out there.
