Life and Songs of Woody Guthrie: American Balladeer at the South Lake Tahoe Library
Tuesday, July 16, 2019, 6:00 pm, Life and Songs of Woody Guthrie: American Balladeer. In his short life, Woody Guthrie (1912-1967) wrote over 1,000 American songs – and he didn’t use an original melody for any of them! This sing-along program tells the story of the man who wrote, “This Land is Your Land,” one of the most widespread English language folksongs. Join the Friends of the Library for Music on the Lawn with Adam Miller. Mr. Miller has performed live in over 2,000 American libraries in 48 states. One of the premier autoharpists in the world, he has distinguished himself as a master storyteller, and as one of the great interpreters of American folksongs and folktales. An award-winning entertainer who never fails to get his audience singing along, he is that rare performer who appeals to audiences of all ages. Bring your lawn chair, a picnic dinner and your family & friends as we celebrate Woody Guthrie's 107th birthday, under the pines at your library. Free and open to all.
Our Board of Directors meets every other month on the third Wednesday (beginning in January). The board meets at 1 pm in the Conference Room of the library with all meetings open to the public and participation is encouraged. Chapter elections are held in November.
Three used book sales are held each year, normally in March, July or August, and November, in the Library Conference Room. The sale runs from 10 am until 3 pm with members allowed in for an early bird sale at 9 am and a chance to win a free bag of books. Books are also available in the library lobby year round.
The primary source of funds raised for the library is through our book sales, however, we sponsor a community fundraiser on alternate years. We also sponsor a book club which meets the third Wednesday of every month at 3 pm in the Library Conference Room.
In addition to the children and teen programs, we sponsor adult programs featuring a variety of speakers and performances.
