Summer Safety Tips for Lake Tahoe

By: Tristan Roberts

With summer unfolding with all of its beauty and heat, people are heading to the water to beat the warmer temperatures the all-natural way.

If you’re heading out to Lake Tahoe, remember a few simple safety tips to make sure that your special relaxation time goes as smoothly as possible.

Cover up
Wearing light clothing will help with the effects of sun exposure as will wearing a hat and sunglasses.  Throw on some waterproof sunscreen and you’ll be set.  Just be careful when you stay out in the sun too long, especially during midday, as sunburns are possible even if you’re in the water.

Go with a friend
Remember when your parents would tell you that there is safety in numbers?  Well, that’s definitely true when going out for a swim.  Even the most experienced of swimmers can have an accident, and having a friend along knowing that both of you will be looking out for each other means you can safely enjoy some leisure time.

Wear a vest
Especially if you’re going out on a boat, jet ski, or any other kind of watercraft, accidents can happen.  A rough wave or a wrong move could send you over the edge and if something worse happens such as getting knocked unconscious, wearing an approved flotation vest can be a literal lifesaver.

Safety in sobriety
There’s little else more refreshing than a cold beer on a hot summer day, but leave the bottles in your cooler onshore if you’re operating a boat on the water.  The impaired judgment and slower reaction times from drinking are a bad combination, and create an opportunity for something to go wrong.  Make the right call that keeps you and others safe out there.
