Fireworks Extravaganza ‘Lights on the Lake’ to Fill Tahoe South Sky July 4

June 10, 2013 (South Lake Tahoe, Calif./Nev.) — Bigger is better. At least when it comes to fireworks. Tahoe South's (http://tahoesouth.com/) "Lights on the Lake," the largest Fourth of July fireworks display in the West, continues the tradition at the “Best Lake in America” (USA Today, Aug. 2012) over the extended holiday weekend.

Consistently bringing more than 100,000 visitors to its shoreline annually, the synchronized music and light show at South Shore continues to draw the attention and ratings of heavyweight online websites, newspapers, magazines and TV programs such as NBC's Today Show and the Discovery Channel as one of the nation's best firework displays.

With last year's designation by USA Today readers as "Best Lake in America" and Yahoo.com touting Tahoe as 2013's seventh best lakeside vacation destinations worldwide, the July 4 holiday gets a four-day weekend extension that has prompted early bookings to shoreline resorts, cabins and campgrounds.

“Summer enthusiasm for attractions, events and new renovations/improvement has launched with a successful start," said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “With more than a month until the major holiday weekend lodging properties have seen a significant uptick in longer lead bookings. There’s still availability for Fourth of July and the remainder of the month, but it’s going quickly.”

With the Sierra Nevada and lake as a backdrop, the 25-minute display is choreographed by Pyro-Spectaculars to hit rock/pop songs along with traditional favorites, including Dave Matthews Band, FUN, Toby Keith, Steve Miller, Elton John, Adele, Ray Charles, and Whitney Houston.

The show begins at 9:45 p.m. with best viewing spots around South Shore’s sandy beaches, including Lakeview Commons/El Dorado Beach area, Nevada Beach, Timber Cove Marina, Bijou Community Park, Edgewood Tahoe (EdgewoodTahoe.com) or on the lake aboard M.S. Dixie II and Tahoe Queen Paddlewheelers. (http://www.zephyrcove.com/)

Holiday visitors can expect the fireworks show to burst into unusual and whimsical shapes such as jellyfish, stars, butterflies, and smiley faces. "Lights on the Lake" is simulcast on local radio stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL-AM 1490. (http://www.krltfm.com/)

With July 4 on Thursday there are plenty of activities lined up throughout the weekend:

Stand Up Paddleboard racing at Lakeview Commons/El Dorado Beach, Wednesday, July 3, 5:45 – 8 p.m. Contestants take to the lake with longboards for an evening of skill and balance along the shore of Lake Tahoe. (http://tahoesouth.com/events/)

The July 4 holiday wouldn't be complete without classic cars and hot rods. Rolling Chrome/Tahoe Thunder Car Show revs up the RPMs, July 4-7, at Heavenly Village.

There's nothing like live music to build on a car show. The Heavenly Village Summer Concert Series (http://www.theshopsatheavenly.com/events.php) continues, July 5, from 5 – 9 p.m. with holiday jams from Connor Bors and Groovebox.

Red, White & Boom, the post-July 4 party blowout at MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa (http://www.montbleuresort.com/) brings renowned DJs to one stage, July 5. Guests include famed DJs Donald Glaude and Eric Lobe.

Ever wonder what creatures are native to Lake Tahoe? "Wild Things," a stage presentation featuring animals that make Tahoe their home, takes place at Taylor Creek’s Lake of the Sky Amphitheater, July 5 (http://www.fs.usda.gov).

The Bard meets the Three Stooges, July 5-13, at the Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival with the Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged. (http://valhallatahoe.com/) In 97 minutes guests will be exposed to all 37 of Shakespeare's plays by three actors. Expect fast-paced, witty, physical comedy.

The festival continues through the holiday weekend with Summer Jazz in the Park and Music on the Lawn, July 7, and Z.O.O.M, July 8, at the Tallac Historic Site's Boathouse Theatre. This zydeco-heavy band is where "swamp pop" meets New Orleans blues, funk, southern rock and Mardi Gras Jazz.

Comedy meets sibling with more than a little ribbing and rivalry July 6 at MontBleu Theatre with the Wayans Brothers, Shawn and Marlon (http://www.montbleuresort.com). Expect twice the laughs with this dynamic comedy family duo.

Paul, John, Ringo and George fans take note, The Fab Four, an acclaimed Beatles Tribute Band, will take to the stage, July 6, at the South Shore Room at Harrah's Lake Tahoe. (http://www.harrahslaketahoe.com/)
