2013 Valhalla art, music and theatre festival at Tahoe South
What do you get when you combine history, the arts, summer and a large body of water? A pretty unique summer festival that happens to be located on the shores of Tahoe South. That’s the Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival in a nutshell. But there’s a bit more to the story.
Every year the Tahoe Tallac Association, a local nonprofit, produces the Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival, hosting a number of plays, musical performances, artists-in-residence and children’s events at three estates on the Tallac Historic Site; the Boathouse Theatre, the Valhalla Grand Hall and the Grand Lawn. This year marks the 33rd year of the festival, which runs June through the end of August.
I may not be a theatre maven, but I’m looking forward to attending a play or two this summer. I’ll admit that it’s as much for the performance itself as it is to enjoy the unique setting in Boathouse Theatre, which was once - wait for it - an actual boat house that was renovated to seat 165. Its lakefront location makes it a really special venue, especially if you can arrive early to picnic on the lawn or adjacent beach.
If the play isn’t your thing, there are a slew of live musical performances, both in the Boathouse Theatre as well as on the lawn. The free Sunday “Music on the Lawn” series begins June 16, and ranges from jazz to folk. Comedy lovers will want to check out the Tahoe Improv players, a group of local performers who will make you laugh, during one of their performances beginning July 9. Kids (and their parents) will love the week-long Children’s Painting Workshops held in July.
