Possible grant for Corral Trail in Tahoe South
Tennyson was on to something when he wrote, “In the spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.” Around these parts, you could add “… and a young woman’s fancy turns to thoughts of trails.” Biking or hiking, I can’t think of a better way to spend a day than on the trails around Lake Tahoe.
I’m lucky enough to live down the street from one of the best mountain biking trails at Lake Tahoe – Corral Loop. Probably the most popular trail on the South Shore in terms of everyday use, Corral is perfect for an afternoon workout and it leaves from very close to Pioneer Trail. And with your help, it’s about to get a lot more love.
Bell Helmets is awarding $100,000 to build three new trails, and our local trail group TAMBA (Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association) has been selected as one of the twelve finalists (out of 100 entries!). Once complete the Corral Trail will be a model for how trails with mountain bike specific features can legally be built in our public forests around the country, showing a model of partnership between the local community and the US Forest Service.
View the approved plan at tamba.org/projects. Over 50 riders gave input on this plan to the US Forest Service over the last two years -- now we need to build it! When selected, IMBA Trail Solutions will come here to help build out all the proposed features on Corral Trail, including jumps, berms, hips, tables, and rock features.
Tahoe is competing against projects in Vermont, Alabama, and Indiana – a vote for Corral Trail means a vote for recreation in Tahoe and a positive partnership with the US Forest Service. We'd all love for Corral to be one of those three winning projects, and TAMBA needs your help. Help by spreading the word and creating some buzz, and remember to vote for Corral on the Bell Facebook page by April 12th. Read the proposal to find out more at TAMBA.org.
