North Face Masters at Kirkwood Mountain
Every year I look forward to watching my friends compete in the North Face Masters of Snowboarding. Last year, I was fortunate to travel with them to the stop at Snowbird as well, and we had a blast. I had a very busy weekend last week in Tahoe with the Ability Challenge on Saturday, a glorious morning on Sunday with the best pow day we’ve had all year, followed by the final day of the competition that afternoon.
We essentially tailgate: dig snow benches, haul out beer and BBQ’s and sit in the sunny Kirkwood Meadow watching amazing athletes send it huge off big cliffs. This year was no different. My dear friend and Kirkwood Freeride Team Member Rosemarie Daiek missed the podium by only a few points this year, but it didn’t bum her out too much since she was headed to Alaska for some heli-touring the next day.
It’s always amazing watching my friends compete. Part of you spends the entire time in awe; part of you is pumped and screaming, while the rest of you is completely nerve wracked that they could hurt themselves, which is always a factor in a competition of this caliber.
In the end, none of our friends made the podium, but it was a fantastic day and will be one of my favorites from this ski season.
