Ice on Fire with Lake Tahoe Epic Curling

Curling your hair? Curling your toes? Epic curling may not be what you think.

Curling is an Olympic sport and with the 2014 Sochi Olympics around the corner, now is the time to get your feet wet—or rather, cold. The sport has been gaining momentum in Tahoe South and it’s an appropriate addition to all the normal (and not-so-normal) passions that we enjoy year round. Yes, year-round.

So, a couple of locals get the idea to start a curling league, donate equipment, reach out for some professional instruction, infect some other locals with the curling bug… and voila!, the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Ice Rink is on fire with curling sessions for drop-ins and league play.

Curling is a shuffleboard/chess type game, where “stones” are slid across the ice, in route to the “house” at the other end of a court. Team members “sweep,” using brooms to influence momentum and direction of the stone. At-rest stones guard and block the scoring area from the other team. Strategy, for sure, is a big part of the game.  778 - tahoe-curling-300.jpg

You don’t have to live here for this crazy club to give you a big ol’ warm (or maybe that’s cold) Tahoe South welcome. For the spectator, walk on in to the South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Ice Rink and take a seat for free. Advice for the in-arena bleachers: bring warm clothes, hat, gloves and maybe a blanket to fling over the legs. If you aren’t equipped to sit rink-side, there’s a lobby viewing area that’s much warmer and has a snack bar for munchies.

Times and fees are available at TahoeCurling.com. Stones, brooms and grips to wear over shoes are provided, so for an inexpensive introduction to a cool ice sport, it’s worth making memories with Lake Tahoe Epic Curling.
