Infographic: 27 Years of Tahoe Celebrity Golf
As we head into the 27th year of the American Century Championship, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority has been able to estimate some pretty impressive statistics.
The 27th annual American Century Championship is a made-for-TV event owned and broadcast by NBC Sports. This premier celebrity golf tournament, which also raises funds for local and national charities, features a record purse of $600,000. The tournament is a 54-hole modified Stableford format that features some of sport’s and entertainment’s greatest celebrities.
The tournament is incredibly popular with locals and visitors alike. Attendance numbers have grown over the years, reaching peak crowds in 2015 at 40,901. The estimated total number of attendees for the tournament is 600,000-650,000.
- More than $4 million has been raised by the American Century Championship for local and national charities.
- In 27 years, 435 unique sports and entertainment personalities have played in the tournament. Over the history of the tournament, there have been 15 professional sports represented: football, basketball, soccer, hockey, baseball, tennis, skiing, golf, NASCAR, swimming, boxing, cycling, skateboarding, surfing, and horseracing.
- On average, 125 private boats will line the shores of Hole 17 each year. It’s true – we’ve counted.
- Volunteers are key to the success of the tournament, and many return year after year. You can see volunteers in many roles, including as marshals, security, and walking scorers. An estimated 10,800 volunteers have participated since the beginning of the tournament, working a total of 518,400 hours.
The 27th annual American Century Championship is being held July 19 – 24, 2016 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore. Tickets are available online, at local Raley’s Supermarkets, or at the gate.
