I love living in South Lake Tahoe; I could not think of a more beautiful place to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities just steps from my front door. If I am honest with myself, though, I have to admit that sometimes I miss getting dressed up for a nice dinner before a night on the town, which is very easy to do in a larger city such as San Francisco or Boston. Much as I love my small mountain town, I felt the high end dining options in South Lake Tahoe lacked variety -- until this past weekend, that is.
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to attend The Landing Resort and Spa’s grand opening on Saturday night, and I was extremely impressed. The opening included a red carpet appearance by model and TV personality Heidi Klum and an acoustic performance by Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. Although walking the red carpet, taking silly pictures in the photo booth and rubbing elbows with celebrities were all part of a memorable evening, the atmosphere of the property is why I plan on returning to The Landing.

The Landing, with its cozy fire pits and glass-encased wine cellar, is sophisticated yet unpretentious. Although it was dark when the party began, I am sure the outdoor patio would be the perfect place to watch the sunset over Lake Tahoe while enjoying a glass of wine -- which is something I plan on this summer. I think the restaurant would be the perfect place for a girls’ night out, or to celebrate a special occasion.
I was pleasantly surprised by the food served at the opening -- almost all the options were vegetarian friendly. I have always been a picky eater when it comes to meat, so I am slightly anxious when attending events, where I do not have the option to choose my meal from a menu. I was so impressed by all the Greek-inspired vegetarian fare served at The Landing – especially the butternut squash gyro. And, although I try to eat healthfully, I do have a sweet tooth. Thankfully, the desserts did not disappoint. The baklava was delicious, and the brandy hot chocolate topped with a homemade marshmallow was divine. I did not hesitate to take a second helping of the hot chocolate when it was offered, and I cannot wait to go back to the restaurant and try some other dishes!
The Landing Resort and Spa is a great addition to the South Lake Tahoe hospitality and dining community. The hotel, with its adjoining spa and salon and lake views, would be the perfect venue for a wedding or a family reunion. I plan on returning to celebrate a special occasion, or the next time I feel like getting dressed up for a nice meal and a glass of wine.
