Tahoe Blue ice hockey

Posted in Family Fun | January 28, 2014 | By Georgette Riley

On a Sunday morning, with three different church services a stone's throw from the ice rink, I figured a hockey game would be a great way to start the day. As this was my first live ice hockey game, I was excited to see what all the fuss was about.

First things first: it's cold in the ice rink. I mean, I knew it would be chilly - there's a rather large sheet of ice in the building - but I was so glad I brought an extra layer. When you go, think hats, gloves, and that warm winter jacket you generally wear on the "really cold" days on the slopes. Maybe a blanket to sit on. I imagine jumping around and cheering a lot will keep you warmer as well, so don't hesitate to give that a try!

Secondly, these young men really play well. At the game I attended, there were a few fights, but for the most part everyone was a good sport and an excellent athlete. A friend expained some of the moves and positions played, but mostly, I just tried to keep up with the puck. Tip: If a puck lands in the stands, you get to keep it. But maybe pass it to that little kid sitting next to you. He reaaallllyyyy wants it, and just because you're taller doesn't mean you'll feel good about yourself if you keep it for a peperweight.

What stood out most for me was the "Code of Conduct" posted above the rink for fans. The Code summed up with: "Please recognize good effort, cheer good play, and keep it fun for everyone!" I want to hang that sign in my office. I want to hang that sign at all event entrances. I want to hang that sign at ski resorts. I want to hang that sign... I think you get my point. What a great reminder at pretty much every group interaction we have.

All in all, I had a great time at my first ice hockey game. There's only one more home series for the Lake Tahoe Blue - against Salt Lake City on February 28, March 1, and March 2 - and I recommend getting out and enjoying at least one of the games. Bring your kids, have a hot chocolate (or beer), and enjoy!
