Beaching it in Tahoe South

Posted in Family Fun | June 10, 2013 | By Tahoe South

Cool mountain air, miles of sandy (yes, real sand) beach and a crystal blue lake that goes for miles — you've reached the shores of Tahoe South. Now what?

Grab a towel or a chair and pack plenty of beverages. Spend your day watching the shades of blue collide with fine sandy granite. Don't forget your shades, sunscreen and, where allowed, your dog. It's time to beach hop Tahoe South-style, with plenty of places to make a splash.

Here are some of my favorite spots:

Lakeview Commons: This 56-acre site of pure South Tahoe vibe opened in summer 2012 with amazing fanfare and expectations that sure enough delivered. The revamped area along El Dorado Beach in South Lake Tahoe offers sandy beaches, kayak and paddle board rentals, live music, a fire pit and picnic areas. Starting June 20, Thursdays evenings through summer are alive with music, food, and adult and kid beverages. If you're visiting and want to go to the local's newest, latest and greatest hotspot, Lakeview Commons is all the rage.

Round Hill Pines: Rent a jet ski, grab a drink from the Tiki Bar, and don’t forget the food for a barbeque. Looking for more fun in the sun? They also offer parasailing, sightseeing cruises to Emerald Bay, heated swimming pools, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits. On the weekends you can probably catch a sunset wedding as this beach is one of the top wedding sites on the South Shore. You’ll want to leave your four-legged friend at home or doggy day care. Tip: carpool because there’s a parking fee and space is limited.

Zephyr Cove: Zephyr Cove Resort’s mile-long private sandy beach offers nonstop opportunities for fun in the sun. Enjoy Tahoe's best volleyball courts, the popular Sunset Bar and Grille with cocktail service, as well as chair and umbrella rentals. If you want to bring your pooch, head to North Zephyr where dogs are allowed.

Kiva: Spend a day playing fetch in the water with your beloved canine at this popular South Shore beach, one of only a handful that welcome dogs. Grab a leash (county leash laws are enforced), a picnic, mat/towels and plenty of tennis balls or search for a few sticks.

Pope: It is the longest of all Tahoe's beaches, and has parking along the length of it. This family-friendly gem is nestled about 3 miles north of the intersection of Highway 50 and Highway 89. There are restrooms, picnic tables, and standing barbecues. Bring a float tube, Frisbee, an ice-chest and your favorite summer reading. Note: not dog-friendly.

What's your favorite Tahoe South beach?
