Swatch Freeride World Tour: Interview with Casey Lucas

Posted in Ski+Snowboard | February 28, 2013 | By Tahoe South

Local Tahoe South athlete and Kirkwood Freeride team member Casey Lucas is poised to have an incredible year. After taking first overall in the Darhron Rahlves Bonzai Tour in 2012, Casey is well positioned for a repeat win after first place finishes at the first two stops of the 2013 event.

As the Swatch Freeride World Tour comes to her home mountain, Lucas is ready to move up in the overall tour standings after fourth place finishes at both Revelstoke and Chamonix and a 2nd place finish at last week's North Face Masters event at Squaw Valley. Last year, Lucas finished 2nd overall in the North Face Masters event, which has been combined for 2013 with the Freeskiing World Tour.

The new event, the Swatch Freeride World Tour, allows for head to head competition between the most extreme athletes from both freeskiing and snowboarding. It takes place this week, Feb. 27-28th, at Kirkwood Mountain Resort. Tahoe South caught up with Lucas this week as she prepares to compete at Kirkwood and asked her a little bit about her life, loves and of course, snowboarding.

What's your riding background?

I started skiing when I was 3 years old. When I was a freshman in high school I wanted to be on the ski team. My sister and I had some sibling rivalry going on, so my mom said that ski team was her thing and I had to choose a different sport. So I asked if I started snowboarding could I do the team. She agreed to this proposition and that's why I am a snowboarder.

What snowboarders do you love to watch?

I, of course, love watching Travis Rice, he looks at the snow world differently then anyone I have ever seen. Funny thing is, I usually watch skiers and am inspired more by the way they ride lines in the mountain.

What is the most rewarding accomplishment of your career thus far and why?

Winning the North Face Masters at Kirkwood. Winning an event is great, but winning at home with your family and friends around is incredible.

What's your pre-competition mantra or routine?

My pre-competition routine consist of me trying not to get to worked up and nervous. I almost make my self sick with worry before a contest. This is where I could really use some work.

Favorite place you've competed?

My favorite place other then Kirkwood that I have competed has to be Revelstoke, BC. They small town ski vibe is a blast. The terrain is amazing and you can access huge faces just minutes off the chair lift.

What are your favorite mountains to shred?

Kirkwood, Revelstoke and Squaw Valley.

What's your favorite run at Kirkwood?

My favorite run at Kirkwood, wow, this is tough. I have so many. I guess I would have to say Eagle bowl, though next time you ask me that may change.

Is there a trick that you'd like to nail down this season?
A trick I would love to stomp this season is a huge layed out back flip.

When you're not snowboarding you are?

When I am not snowboarding these days I am returning emails, flying somewhere to snowboard, working, or just staying healthy to keep me fit for snowboarding.

What's your off season training regimen?

For my off season training I spend my time DH Biking, swimming, Cross Fitting, throw in a little P90X here and there, oh and sun bathing.

Best piece of advice you were ever given?

Best piece of advise I was given had to be, "Have Fun!" Life is that simple.

Best piece of advice you can give to aspiring snowboarders?

My advice to aspiring snowboarders is: never give up! The only one stopping you from living your dreams is you. Take good care of your mind, body, and spirit, and you can accomplish anything.

What motivates you?

What motivates me most has to be love: I love to have fun, I love snowboarding, I love the people who inspire me most.

What's your favorite place to eat/celebrate in Tahoe South?

My favorite place to eat and celebrate is in my own home, with the people I love most. If I would choose to go out, hands down The Naked Fish.

What's your favorite Tahoe South summer activity?

My favorite Tahoe summer day would consist of an early morning leisure breakfast, to a challenging bike ride, a beach cruiser to the beach to hang in the sun, and to finish it off with a sunset cruise with my man on the ski boat.

What are your goals for the next few years?

My goals for the next few years are simple, continuing to push my limits. I want to make what may seem impossible, possible. I want to get faster, go bigger, become more confident and calculated.
