Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues, is the founder of One Billion Rising, a global and social revolution aimed at bringing awareness to violence against women. Calling out the fact that one in three women will be raped in her lifetime, the project asked women and those who loved them all over the globe to rise up against this statistic with their action. The project, which was spread primarily through word of mouth and social media, asked women all over the globe to “walk out, dance, rise up, and demand an end to this violence.”

Here in Tahoe, one of my close friends, Debbie, partnered with another local, Jenn Gurecki of The Zawadisha Fund for a coordinated cross-global campaign. Gurecki is currently in Kenya on a six week trip that pairs North American women with Kenyan women who have received micro loans through her Zawadisha fund, a non-profit dedicated to empowering, entrusting, and expanding the opportunities for women and children in African countries through a specific and flexible micro-lending and business model that addresses the issues that impact income and the quality of life such as savings, education and preventative health care issues. Debbie, in Tahoe, and Jenn, in Kenya, both hit the streets in to ask people, “What are you doing to rise up against violence?”
The Tahoe South One Billion Rising Flash Mob radiated exhilaration from start to finish.
Here in Tahoe, the afternoon culminated in a Flash Mob at the Heavenly Gondola where about 80 participants danced in joy, calling out for an end to violence against women. I was asked to come photograph the event. These are a few of my favorite photos from the afternoon, but you can view the entire gallery via this link.
