Nevada 150

Posted in Local Culture | October 24, 2013 | By Georgette Riley

Fly the Nevada state flag!

Sing Nevada’s state song (with Claymation)!

Dig up Nevada’s state fossil! (you didn’t know we had one of those, did you?)

Nevada’s turning 150, and we’ll be celebrating state-wide all year long.

On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. Since 1938, Nevadans have celebrated Nevada Day, a state holiday now recognized on the last Friday in October. Nevada’s Sesquicentennial (a fancy way to say 150th) celebration will commence on October 25, Nevada Day 2013, and conclude with an expanded Nevada Day celebration in October 2014.

To celebrate the Sesquicentennial, plans include official community-based and signature Nevada 150 events. These events and projects will be strategically designed to connect all communities throughout Nevada by tapping into the common pride in our shared heritage possessed by all who live or have lived in Nevada. For more information on planned events and Nevada’s culture and heritage, visit https://www.nevada150.org/

A message from Nevada Governor Sandoval

“Nevada’s 150th anniversary celebration is an opportunity for us to share our history, our culture and our future with each other and with people from around the world. Nevada’s best days are here to come and together we will make this an anniversary we will cherish and remember forever.”
