Community holiday festivities in Tahoe South

This time of year, there is something special about standing out in the cold with your friends and neighbors as you watch a tree go up in lights. And singing holiday songs on a festive sleigh ride as you wait for your one-on-one with Santa a nice touch. We have two very special tree-related events this weekend – both free and open to all – as we gear up for the holidays in Tahoe South.

On Friday, December 7, join the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority for the annual Community Winter Tree and Menorah Lighting. The evening of festivities begins at 5 pm, and includes hot chocolate, cookies and complimentary Borges sleigh rides. Holiday music will be provided by Lake DJ, and there will be a special performance by members of the South Lake Tahoe Children's Choral Society.

  • Bring your camera for complimentary pictures with Santa!
  • Open house for the Art Center and History Museum.
  • Accepting donations of canned food and toys for Christmas Cheer and Caps for Kids.

For more information, stop in at the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority California Visitor Center (3066 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA), call (530) 541-5255 or email

On Sunday, December 9, the Meyers Community Alliance will hold the second annual Tree Lighting at 6pm in the Divided Sky/Downtown Café parking lot. This year the event will be powered by the people.

Elevated Fitness of South Lake Tahoe, the only carbon-neutral gym in the U.S., will lead the first pedal-powered holiday tree lighting event in Lake Tahoe, perhaps the first ever in the United States. Volunteers will pedal a rack of bicycles that will light up the 100-foot Jeffrey pine with over 6500 LED lights. The carbon-light approach to lighting the holiday tree is in part to promote the Meyers’ vision and efforts to become a sustainable, healthy community for residence and visitors.

  • The Christmas fire truck and Santa, via the Calstar Helicopter, will return and this year music will be added to the mix.
  • Complimentary popcorn and hot cocoa will be served.
  • The event is free and open to the public.

For more information, contact Rene Brejc of the Meyers Community Alliance at (530) 577-7111.
