Countdown to SnowGlobe: Plan your trip

Posted in Local Culture | November 30, 2012 | By Tahoe South

SnowGlobe Music Festival is returning to Tahoe South for its second year and it's not too late to join in on the fun. General admission tickets are still on sale. With a lineup headlined by Canadian Electro House superstar Deadmau5, checking out the mouse that all the kids are into these days is probably worth the ticket price itself.

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, buy a single day ticket for New Year's Eve to see Chromeo, whose vivid guitars and funky synths rooted in electro are sure to make even the electronic nay-sayer boogie. Into rap? There's a bit of that this year, with Wiz Khalifa, whose single "Black and Yellow" found itself at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Regardless, as we count down to all things SnowGlobe, keep an eye out for my insider tips to all things both in and out of the festival. For now, if you haven't planned your trip already, you'd best get on it!

WHERE TO STAY:

  • $$$$ The Stardust Lodge is always a favorite recommendation of mine, not just for its quirky lovable retro sign: it's close to numerous shuttle pickups for the event and striking distance from the casinos, but it's not a casino itself, allowing guests the value and location of staying in our nightlife corridor, but not sleeping with it.
  • $$$ Basecamp Hotel in Tahoe South has partnered with SnowGlobe to offer a travel package for two. At $950, it's actually not as pricey as it sounds as your purchase price includes 2 VIP tickets to the festival, a 3 night stay at a boutique hotel with what I hear is an amazing bar on the rooftop, complimentary shuttle transportation to and from the event, continental breakfasts, and "hangover kits" in the room to help you recover from three nights of extreme dancing.
  • $$ The Motel 6 near the Y in Tahoe South has affordable rates (from $119 per night) and my parents have stayed there which means it's clean, though without the frills you might find at the other motels. With the casinos charging close to $400/night for guests to ring in the New Year, I'd say this is a bargain and very close to pick up/drop off locations for the SnowGlobe shuttle.
  • $ Airbnb still has one private room in a shared house up for grabs for those dates. Airbnb is my favorite way to travel: staying in a local's home offers a social, authentic and unique travel experience that far exceeds a hotel stay in my opinion. It's not for everyone, but if you are adventurous, outgoing and like to meet new people, it's a wonderful way to travel. My own rooms have been booked for weeks already. If you're coming with a group, sites like Airbnb and VRBO are great resources for house rentals, which may be a more affordable way to visit than staying in a hotel.

HOW TO GET HERE: If you aren't driving yourself in, there are a number of options at your disposal:

  • $$$ For just a bit longer, Southwest Airlines offers nonstop service multiple times a day between Oakland and the Reno Tahoe International Airport. From there, hop on the South Tahoe Express which offers nonstop shuttle service between the airport and the Tahoe South Casino Corridor.
  • $$ Amtrak offers daily bus service into Tahoe out of Sacramento.
  • $ All Craigslist regional forums have a ride share option and there are daily requests for ride shares to the Tahoe area. Be adventurous, make a new friend, and get up here to ring in the New Year like it's 1999.
